I’ve Made Only 30 Political Appointments to the Presidency- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has debunked claims that a wide pool of political appointees have been recruited at the Presidency, saying 30 appointments have so far been made.
These appointments, including 27 Presidential staffers and three Directors, are pending the approval of the Council of State.
Speaking at the swearing-in of 13 Deputy Ministers at the Jubilee House on March 12, 2025, he said, his commitment to running a lean government has found expression in the appointment made at the Presidency too.
“So far, I have appointed 27 Presidential staffers to various roles and three persons as Directors of important government initiatives bringing the total number of political appointees so far to 30.”
Unlike the previous administration, he vowed to make use of a reasonable number of recruits to fully functionalize the Presidency.
“At the last count, there were 336 political appointees at the Presidency under the previous government. While we were in the process of recruiting supporting staff to enable the full functioning of the Presidency, the numbers will come nowhere near the army of people that was hired under the previous government.”
According to him, the administration’s commitment to a lean government is grounded in the firm belief towards fiscal discipline through efficient and responsible use of public resources.
“This commitment stems from deep recognition that there must be a fair balance between government expenditure and the responsibility of citizens to fund national development and state administration through payment of their taxes.
Public funds must go primarily into investments that benefit the Ghanaian people directly and those who administer those funds and use it in pursuit of that objective must not be the largest beneficiary of same.”
