GTEC, UNISA Explore Ghana-Based Learning Hub to Boost Access to Distance Education

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has held high-level talks with the University of South Africa (UNISA) to deepen collaboration in tertiary education and expand access for Ghanaian learners.
The strategic engagement took place at UNISA’s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria on April 14, 2026, and focused on regulatory trust, quality assurance, and practical steps to widen higher education opportunities.
Key outcomes from the meeting include a proposal to establish a UNISA Learning Centre in Ghana, aimed at providing local academic and administrative support for students enrolled in UNISA programmes.
The two institutions also discussed expanding access to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) to help more Ghanaians pursue internationally recognised qualifications without leaving the country.
Other highlights were capacity building initiatives for GTEC staff and sector stakeholders, and progress toward mutual recognition of qualifications to ease student mobility and professional certification between Ghana and South Africa.
GTEC said the initiative aligns with Ghana’s drive for quality, accessible, and globally competitive higher education.
A local UNISA hub would reduce barriers such as travel, exam logistics, and student support while maintaining academic standards.
UNISA, Africa’s largest open distance learning institution, has a long history of serving Ghanaian students across disciplines, including law, business, education, and the sciences.
Both parties agreed to set up technical working groups to finalise frameworks for the learning centre, quality assurance protocols, and recognition agreements.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen Ghana’s tertiary education landscape, promote skills development, and support the government’s goal of increasing gross tertiary enrollment.
