Gov’t Expands GETFund to Cover Feeding Costs for Learners with Special Educational Needs

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has launched a new initiative under the amended GETFund Act to provide dedicated funding for learners with special educational needs.
According to the Ministry, this reaffirms the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable access to quality education.
Delivering his address at the launch, Mr Iddrisu said the amendment to the GETFund Act was initially intended to address the sustainable financing of Free Senior High School education.
That provision was designed to ensure uninterrupted academic activities and to eliminate challenges associated with delays in the release of feeding funds.
He added that the government has now expanded the scope of the Act to include dedicated support for learners with special educational needs.
As part of the new intervention, the Minister announced that the GETFund would fully absorb the feeding costs of all learners in public special and integrated schools.
He explained that the arrangement would ensure that school heads no longer have to depend on the timing of warrant releases before providing meals to students.
The move is expected to ease financial pressures on special and integrated schools and to strengthen the government’s broader agenda of making education accessible to all learners, regardless of ability.
