Govt Confirms Resignation of Justice Sophia Akuffo from Council of State

Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has confirmed that former Chief Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo has resigned from her position as a member of the Council of State.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, 15 June 2026, Kwakye Ofosu said Justice Akuffo submitted her resignation letter to President John Dramani Mahama in September 2025, but did not state a reason for stepping down.
According to the Spokesperson, the President was required to indicate acceptance of the resignation. However, at the request of the Council of State, he held off.
“The Council of State said they wanted to engage Justice Sophia Akuffo to see if there was some grievance that she had that was informing the resignation and whether or not it could be addressed,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.
After that engagement, the Council informed the President that the resignation could be accepted.
President Mahama has now formally accepted it, and Justice Akuffo is no longer a member of the Council of State.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that the law is clear on the process for replacing a Council of State member.
“That is going on as we speak, so in due course, a replacement will be announced,” he said.
