Ghana to Destroy Over 2,000 Seized Firearms on July 9

Ghana will organise an arms destruction ceremony on July 9, 2026, at the Police Depot in Accra as part of post-amnesty measures, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has announced.

Speaking at a press conference on June 23, 2026, Mubarak said over 2,000 seized and surrendered firearms will be destroyed at the event.

The ceremony forms part of the government’s efforts to ensure illicit weapons recovered during and after the gun amnesty programme are permanently removed from circulation.

The Interior Minister noted that the destruction exercise underscores the government’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal arms and strengthening public safety following the closure of the amnesty window.

He reiterated that with the amnesty period over, security agencies will transition to robust enforcement through intelligence-led operations, searches, and surveillance of criminal networks.

An informant reward system will also be activated to encourage citizens to provide credible information on illegal firearms.

Mubarak urged the public to support the exercise and remain vigilant as the government works to sustain peace and security across the country.

The gun amnesty was implemented from December 1, 2025, to January 30, 2026.
