Ghana Congratulates U.S. on 250th Independence Anniversary

Ghana has conveyed a message of congratulations and goodwill to the Government and people of the United States of America on the 250th Anniversary of American Independence, on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was highlighted that Ghana and the United States have enjoyed cordial and friendly relations dating back to Ghana’s independence in 1957.

The Ministry recalled that the U.S. sent an official delegation to Ghana’s independence celebrations led by then Vice President Richard Nixon, and accompanied by civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and diplomat Ralph Bunche.

That visit, the statement said, laid a formidable foundation for bilateral relations and culminated in the U.S. being among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Ghana in 1957.

Over the past seven decades, the Ministry said, diplomatic engagements and partnerships between the two countries have grown significantly.

It described the relationship as mutually beneficial, with both nations actively implementing significant bilateral agreements across multiple sectors.

The statement highlighted key areas of cooperation including the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company, VALCO, projects under the Millennium Challenge Compact, MCC, the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, strong collaboration in the social sector, and increasing strategic trade and investment.

The two countries have also exchanged memorable high-level visits, with U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all making landmark visits to Ghana in 1998, 2008 and 2009 respectively.

From the Ghanaian side, successive Presidents including Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and John Dramani Mahama have undertaken official and working visits to the U.S. to deepen cooperation.

The Ministry further lauded people-to-people ties between Ghanaians and Americans, which it said contribute to mutual understanding and robust educational and cultural exchanges.

In his letter to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, Ghana stated that the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries will continue to be shaped by shared values and common interests, particularly in the areas of the rule of law, human rights and democracy, as well as a shared aspiration for economic prosperity.
