Asanteman Council Holds First Meeting

The Asanteman Council held their first meeting of the year on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

The meeting, chaired by the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was attended by paramount chiefs and queen mothers from different regions- including the Ashanti Region, Bono Region and the Ahafo Region- that form Asanteman.

Among them were Juabenhene Nana Otuo Serebuo II, Asante Mampohene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Asante Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II, Ejisuhemaa Nana Yaa Asantewaa II, Sampamanhene Nana Samgba Gyafla II, Seikwamanhene Nana Debrah Adjei and Tuabodommanhene Nana Agyei Kooko Beyeeman.

The meeting saw two traditional rulers taking the oath of allegiance to the occupant of the Golden Stool.

Otumfuo New Year Message
In a welcome address, His Majesty wished all the traditional leaders well and sought joy, blessings, glory and good health for them.

“I welcome you all and wish you a happy New Year. It is my prayer that God helps us to achieve our heart desires and add up riches, glory and prosperity to the Kingdom.”

He also counselled the authorities to be candid and selfless in delivering their mandate as forefathers did for Asanteman.

“Our forefathers were candid and bold. They sacrificed themselves for the enlargement of the Kingdom. Will we ever find someone like Tweneboa Kodua, Kwesi Kufo, Dankwa Yiadom, Boahen Anantuo and Yaa Asantewaa? Let us emulate them.”

He reminded them that the Kingdom gained roots and enlarged due to the sacrifices of these persons.

Additionally, he alluded to customs and traditions which are fading in some parts of the Kingdom due to civilization and urged the paramount chiefs and sub-chiefs present to uphold them in their reign.

Oath of Allegiance
Offinsomanhene, Nana Dwamena Akenten II and Fiaprehene Obrempong Professor Kyem Amponsah II swore oath of allegiance to His Majesty.

They each swore the oath as they took turns before Otumfuo and the entire Council to hold the Mponponsuo sword.

Next Meeting
The Council is not expected to convene this month after yesterday’s sittings, it was announced.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in February.
