Ghana Confirms Bashiru Isak Was Killed In South Africa Xenophobic Attack

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Bashiru Isak, a Ghanaian father of three, was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, in an incident linked to the ongoing wave of xenophobic attacks in that country.
In an update to its July 1, 2026 press statement, the Ministry said Mr Isak was shot multiple times.
The confirmation refutes earlier false claims made by some South African officials about the identity of the victim.
With the consent of the bereaved family, the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Pretoria, facilitated the repatriation of Mr Isak’s mortal remains.
The body arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at 6:40 pm, and was received at the airport by family members and senior officials of the Ministry.
The remains have since been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital.
The Ministry said it and the family have agreed to conduct an independent autopsy after both the High Commission in Pretoria and Mr Isak’s family were unsuccessful in obtaining an autopsy report from South African authorities.
The Government of Ghana has renewed its call for justice. “We expect expedited investigations, arrests and prosecution.
There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr Isak,” the statement said.
The Ministry added that following the autopsy, Mr Isak will be buried in accordance with Islamic customs.
It reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure that justice is manifestly served.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its deepest condolences to the parents, wife, children, friends, and loved ones of the late Bashiru Isak, and said the thoughts and prayers of the Government of Ghana remain with the family in their irreplaceable loss.
