Body Of Ghanaian Killed in South Africa Repatriated To Ghana After Fatal Shooting

The mortal remains of Bashiru Isak, the Ghanaian father of three fatally shot in South Africa, have been repatriated to Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

The body arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 6:40 pm.

Family members and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present to receive it.

The remains have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital pending burial.

The repatriation was facilitated by the Government of Ghana through its High Commission in Pretoria, with the consent of the bereaved family.

In an update to its July 1, 2026 press statement, the Ministry confirmed that Mr Isak was shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town, in circumstances linked to the current wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The Ministry said this confirmation contradicts earlier false claims made by some South African officials about the identity of the deceased.

The Ministry also announced that it and the family have agreed to conduct an independent autopsy, after both the High Commission in Pretoria and Mr Isak’s family were unsuccessful in obtaining an autopsy report from South African authorities.

The Government of Ghana has renewed its demand for justice.

“We expect expedited investigations, arrests and prosecution. There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr Isak,” the statement said.

The Ministry added that after the autopsy, Mr Isak will be buried in accordance with Islamic customs. It reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure that justice is manifestly served.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its deepest condolences to the parents, wife, children, friends, and loved ones of the late Bashiru Isak, and said the thoughts and prayers of the Government of Ghana remain with the family.
