Ghana and Viet-Nam Sign Visa Exemption Deal at Maiden Political Consultations

Ghana and Viet-Nam have signed an Agreement on Visa Exemptions for Holders of Diplomatic, Official and Service Passports, following the maiden Ghana–Viet Nam Political Consultations.

The agreement was reached at the close of the inaugural consultations on July 2, 2026, which brought together senior officials from both countries to review bilateral relations, exchange views on regional and international developments, and identify practical measures to deepen cooperation.

The deal is expected to facilitate official exchanges, strengthen institutional cooperation, and further deepen the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

Ghana’s delegation was led by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, MP, while Viet Nam was represented by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Lê Anh Tuấn.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Quayson described the talks as an important milestone and noted that they coincided with the 60th anniversary of President Kwame Nkrumah’s historic peace mission to Viet Nam.

He said the new Political Consultation mechanism will institutionalise regular dialogue and provide a structured platform to review cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, fisheries, education, technical cooperation and capacity building.

H.E. Mr Lê Anh Tuấn expressed appreciation for Ghana’s hospitality and conveyed Viet Nam’s condolences over lives lost to recent flooding.

He noted that Ghana remains an important partner for Viet Nam in West Africa, with bilateral trade surpassing $1 billion in 2025 to make Ghana Viet Nam’s fourth-largest trading partner in Africa.

He added that Viet-Nam is ready to strengthen cooperation through government-to-government, parliamentary and people-to-people exchanges.

The consultations also covered political cooperation, high-level visits, investment, technical cooperation, and multilateral issues, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expand engagement in areas of mutual interest.
