Mahama, Maada Bio Discuss Floods and ECOWAS Cooperation During One-day State Visit

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday received Sierra Leone’s President, HE Julius Maada Bio, in Accra for a one-day state visit focused on climate-induced flooding and deeper regional cooperation within ECOWAS.

President Bio, who also serves as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority, conveyed condolences and expressed solidarity with Ghana following recent devastating floods that have displaced thousands and caused loss of lives across the country.

Briefing the media after bilateral talks, President Mahama said the government has mobilised the Ghana Armed Forces and the Joint Task Force to support recovery operations, including clearing waterways and restoring normalcy in affected areas.

He added that the Finance Minister has released funds from the Contingency Fund to support relief efforts being coordinated by NADMO and other agencies.

According to the President, preliminary assessments show about 48,000 people have been rendered homeless, with 12 confirmed fatalities and several others still unaccounted for as emergency response and relief distribution continue.

The two leaders also held consultations on regional security, governance, and economic integration ahead of the upcoming ECOWAS summit in Sierra Leone.

President Bio emphasised the need for stronger West African collaboration on climate change, urban planning challenges, and disaster preparedness.

He expressed deep sympathy with Ghana over the impact of the floods.
