Galamsey: Gov’t Begins Land Reclamation with Handing Over of 800-Acre Site

The government has started a new phase of its fight against the effects of illegal and irresponsible mining, with the official handover of an 800-acre site for land reclamation.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, handed over the degraded land along the River Subile in the Ellembelle District to Ecorestore Gh Ltd on May 27, 2026, to begin restoration works.
The project is being funded by Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, a large-scale mining company, in partnership with the Ministry.
The initiative targets land damaged by years of mining activity in the area.
According to the Ministry, the tree species selected for the reclamation are chosen specifically to improve soil fertility, restore ecological balance, and return the land to productive use for farming and other livelihoods.
The move forms part of broader government efforts to reverse environmental degradation in forest reserves and farming communities affected by galamsey.
The Minister, in a Facebook post, said the partnership with Zijin Golden Ridge Limited reflects a commitment to ensuring that mining companies contribute directly to rehabilitating lands impacted by their operations.
The government reiterated that it remains committed to reclaiming degraded sites across the country and holding operators accountable for land restoration.
The River Subile project is expected to serve as a model for similar reclamation efforts in other mining-affected districts.
