U/WR: Police Arrest 34 Suspects Linked to Funsi Chieftaincy Dispute Shooting that Claimed 3 Lives

Police in the Upper West Region have arrested 34 people in connection with a shooting in Funsi that left three young men dead on the night of 22 May 2026.
The incident occurred in the Belonosi section of the Wa East District town and is linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute between rival gates.
According to the Upper West Regional Police Command, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:00 p.m. and found two victims, identified as Fufulu Nandugu, 37, and Yussif Samahan, 22, dead at the scene.
During subsequent operations in the community, police discovered a third victim, Amadu Lukman, 20, who had also been killed.
A reinforcement team led by Regional Commander DCOP Francis Yiribaare was sent to Funsi to bolster security and support the investigation.
Arrest
In targeted operations in the area, the police arrested 34 suspects.
Police said they retrieved a shotgun, bow and arrows, gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks, and a medallion believed to be tied to the chieftaincy tensions.
All suspects and exhibits have been moved to Wa for further investigation and processing.
Pledge for Justice
The Police Administration said it had extended condolences to the bereaved families and pledged to ensure that everyone responsible for the violence is brought to justice.
In its statement, the Regional Command urged residents and stakeholders to remain calm and avoid reprisal attacks.
It called on the public to cooperate by providing credible information to aid investigations.
Security has been tightened in Funsi, with intensified patrols and other measures in place to prevent further disturbances.
