KMA Prosecutes 10 Sanitation Offenders, Warns “Ignorance Of The Law Is No Excuse”

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has prosecuted 10 sanitation offenders at the Prempeh Assembly Hall Courts, as part of renewed efforts to enforce sanitation laws in the metropolis.
The cases, heard on Tuesday at Courts 1 and 2 presided over by His Worship Kwaku Ansah Akrofi and Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkoh, resulted in various fines.
According to the Assembly, 6 offenders were each fined 100 penalty units, 2 offenders received 140 penalty units each, and 1 offender was fined 80 penalty units.
The offences included insanitary surroundings, overgrown weeds, abandoned items, burning of waste within residential premises, keeping an unvaccinated dog, discharging effluent into public drains, and maintaining insanitary washrooms.
In a statement issued after the court proceedings, KMA said its task force also continued its enforcement exercise at Boakye Dankwah, Dichemso.
Several offenders were arrested during the operation.
The Assembly noted that while some residents complied immediately, others claimed they were unaware of the sanitation laws or had not heard the public education campaign.
Some residents were also said to have locked themselves indoors to avoid the exercise.
KMA has reminded the public that ignorance of the law is no excuse, and urged residents to adhere to sanitation by-laws to keep Kumasi clean and healthy.
The Assembly added that enforcement and prosecution exercises will be intensified across all sub-metros to ensure compliance and safeguard public health.
