EPA Begins Stakeholder Engagement Ahead of Nationwide Styrofoam Ban in 2027

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has commenced nationwide stakeholder consultations on the implementation of a ban on polystyrene foam products, commonly known as Styrofoam, which takes effect on January 1, 2027.

The engagements began on June 3, 2026, and form part of a broader education and consultation process to ensure a smooth transition for businesses and consumers ahead of the ban.

EPA officials have met key industry and regulatory bodies in the first round of talks. Stakeholders engaged include the Association of Ghana Industries, Food and Beverage Association of Ghana, Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Plastic Manufacturers Association.

It has also engaged the Hoteliers Association of Ghana, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division.

According to the EPA, these initial consultations mark the start of a series of engagements that will be intensified in the coming months.

The goal is to support industry compliance, strengthen enforcement preparedness, and promote sustainable alternatives to Styrofoam packaging and containers.

The nationwide ban targets the single-use foam products widely used in Ghana’s food and beverage sector due to their environmental impact.

EPA says the phased consultation approach is meant to give manufacturers, importers, hoteliers, and traders enough time to adjust operations and switch to biodegradable or reusable options.

Stakeholders are expected to provide input on timelines, enforcement mechanisms, and support for local manufacturers transitioning to alternatives.

The Authority noted that public education campaigns will also roll out alongside the industry engagements to drive awareness.
