Energy Minister Outlines Efforts to Boost Power Generation in Kumasi

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has outlined a series of immediate interventions aimed at boosting power generation and supply reliability in Kumasi.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, April 27, the Minister said engineers will move to Kumasi this week to begin replacing obsolete electricity transformers at key supply stations.

The exercise is part of a nationwide plan to deploy 2,500 transformers to improve voltage stability and reduce outages.

“By close of this week, we will move to Kumasi to tackle the Ridge Primary Substation, and we are moving away from the 20kV to about 30kV,” Jinapor said.

According to him, nearly 200 transformers have been installed this month, with another 140 expected to be deployed this week. Completed sites include Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua.

“High-capacity transformers are being deployed at key primary supply stations to improve supply reliability and voltage stability,” he noted.

Distribution and Transmission Works
In addition to transformer replacement, engineers will begin work on distribution lines in Kumasi this week to further strengthen the local network.

The Minister also announced that Cenit Energy Limited will airlift a critical component to Kumasi to bolster generation capacity, in partnership with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

Looking ahead, he said GRIDCo is preparing to commence major transmission reinforcement works in Kumasi in June to address bottlenecks and enhance grid resilience in the Ashanti Region.

He indicated that these measures are designed to deliver reliable power to households and businesses in Kumasi.
