Transformer Replacement to Begin in Kumasi This Week – Energy Minister

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, says engineers will move to Kumasi this week to replace obsolete electricity transformers to enhance power supply in Ghana’s second-largest city.

The replacement will take place at key supply stations to improve supply reliability and voltage stability, he said at a press briefing on April 27, 2026.

This forms part of immediate interventions to deploy 2,500 transformers, an exercise that has already begun in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Minister, almost 200 transformers have been installed this month, with another 140 expected to be deployed this week.

“In all, we seek to deploy 2,500 transformers to improve supply reliability and voltage stability. To improve these voltages, high-capacity transformers are being deployed at key primary supply stations. We have done Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua,” he said.

The operation will move to the Ashanti Region by the close of the week.

“By close of this week, we will move to Kumasi to tackle the Ridge Primary Substation, and we are moving away from the 20kV to about 30kV,” he added.

In addition, he said engineers will also begin work on distribution lines this week.

The Minister further announced plans for Cenit Energy Limited to airlift a critical component to Kumasi to strengthen the generation network in partnership with GRIDCo.

Meanwhile, he said the Ghana Grid Company is also preparing to commence critical transmission reinforcement works in Kumasi in June.
