Education Ministry Suspends SHS Graduation Ceremonies Over Excessive Wealth Display

The Ministry of Education has suspended all Senior High School graduation ceremonies nationwide with immediate effect over growing public concern about excessive displays of wealth and flamboyance at such events.

The directive was issued by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who has ordered the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, GES, to halt the ceremonies pending a review of existing guidelines.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry said it had “taken note of growing public concerns” about students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders using graduation events to showcase affluence.

The Ministry emphasised that schools are institutions for learning, character development, discipline, and nurturing responsible citizens.

“Graduation ceremonies are intended to celebrate academic achievement and personal growth and should therefore reflect the values of modesty, dignity, and respect associated with the educational environment,” the statement said.

The Ministry strongly condemned any conduct that promotes extravagance and detracts from the true purpose of school ceremonies.

It added that it remains committed to ensuring all school activities uphold the highest standards of discipline, responsibility, and moral development, in line with the objectives of Ghana’s education system.
