ECOWAS Court Dismisses Claims by Former Chief Justice Torkornoo Against Ghana

The ECOWAS Community Court has dismissed all seven claims filed by former Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo against the Republic of Ghana, including her demand for US$10 million in damages.
Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, announced the ruling on Facebook, saying the Court “dismissed all of the 7 claims which the former Chief Justice… brought against our beloved Republic.”
On the claim for US$10 million in reparations, the Court held that “in light of the Court’s conclusions that Ghana has not violated any of the Applicant’s rights under the African Charter as alleged, the Court makes no decision on reparations.”
Justice Torkornoo had dragged Ghana before the ECOWAS Court after her removal from office, alleging violations of her rights under the African Charter.
The Court’s decision means it found no breach of her rights as claimed.
The Deputy Attorney-General commended the legal team that defended Ghana’s case.
“Thanks, again, to our team of illustrious State Attorneys who put in hours and hours of research to support the Republic’s defence,” he wrote.
The ruling brings to a close the former Chief Justice’s ECOWAS Court case against the state.
