Court of Arbitration For Sports Upholds Richmond Lamptey Appeal Against GFA Ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) sitting in Switzerland has delivered a ruling upholding Asante Kotoko player Richmond Lamptey’s appeal against a ruling by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The ruling comes a year after he was banned from football-related activities for 30 months.

The Porcupine midfielder was banned by the GFA Disciplinary Committee following his implication in a match-fixing scandal in a match between AshantiGold and Inter Allies during his time with Allies.

It is reported that the game in question which took place at the end of the 2020/2021 season saw Ashantigold beating Inter Allies by 7-0.

The Richmond was therefore banned on July 13, 2023.

In a ruling on July 27, the CAR held, “The appeal filed by Mr Richmond Lamptey against the decision issued on 13 July 2022 by the Ghana Football Association Appeals Committee…is upheld.”

The court also annulled the sanctions placed on him by the Association.

It also ordered the GFA to pay CHF 3,000 which is approximately GHC39, 120.05 to Richmond as a contribution towards his legal fee and other expenses related to his arbitration proceedings.
