Bohyen Presby Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The Star of David Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, in the Bohyen District of the Asante Presbytery, has held a durbar to climax their 50th anniversary celebrations.

The grand durbar was held on Sunday, 17th December 2023 at the Church auditorium under the theme, “Celebrating 50 years of God’s Goodness: Our History, Our Achievements and Our Hopes (Psalm 145:17)”.

It was attended by many dignitaries including the Minister of Works and Housing who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama, Hon. Francis Asenso Boakye; the Kumasi Mayor, Hon Samuel Pyne; and the Queen Mother of Bohyen Nana Owusuaa Mprengo.

Among the clergy in attendance were Rev Kofi Nyarko, a former Bantama District Minister who represented the Asnate Presbytery Chairperson, Rev Raphael Aboagye Appiah, immediate past District Minister, Rev J.H. Ofosuhene, former District Minister, and Rev Samuel K. Baffour, the current Bohyen District Minister.

It was a joyous occasion for the hundreds of congregants clad in their glamorous anniversary cloth who filled the Church auditorium to partake in the grand durbar and Thanksgiving Service.

Delivering a sermon, Rev Kofi Nyarko, said it was an occasion for the congregation to reflect on the past and right their wrongs by doing things right and orderly and congratulated them on their anniversary.

“It is always right and just to thank God on ocasions like this. If Bohyen is celebrating 50 years of existence, it is worth it. At this point in one’s life, it is important to reflect on the past and take stock of everything; what did you do wrong and what did you do right, your ommissions and all that matters. Marking your birthday such as this tells you to do all things right and orderly,” he advised.

Host District Minister, Rev Samuel Kyere Baffour speaking to the media recalled the early stages of the Church which he said was started by the Peyer Congregation, Bantama with about 14 members.

After 50 years, he joyfully noted that the Star of David Congregation has a membership of over 900 and established other churches including the Trinity Congregation, Abrepo and the Gathsemane Congregation, Ohwim whiles it headquarters the Bohyen District with about 21 congregations. The Star of David Congregation also boasts of a basic school from Creche to Junior High School, also at the premises of the Church.

“This Church was established by the BSPG of Bantama when they realised there was no Presbyterian Church here at Bohyen. They started from someone’s residence and moved to a school before finally securing a piece of land which is our present location. So all that we are saying is God has been good to us and we thank Him for sustaining us in the past 50 years and still counting.”

Also speaking on the occasion, the Bantama MP, Hon Francis Asenso Boakye while congratulating the Church said he had also come to thank the congregation for their continuous support and reposing their trust in him and the government. He urged them to continue to support the government in these trying times of global hardship.

The Kumasi Mayor, Hon Sam Pyne pleaded with the congregation to help keep the Kumasi city particularly the various market centres in Kumasi clean as he dwelled on the Sermon asking Christians to do things right and orderly.
