Amoakohene Assesses KATH Overflow Measures

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has visited Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to assess emergency coordination measures instituted to manage patient overflow and temporarily address the facility’s bed-space challenges.
Dr Amoakohene toured the wards and interacted with staff and patients during the visit on June 5, 2026.
He reported that operations were running smoothly under the current arrangements put in place to ease pressure on KATH, Ghana’s main referral hospital in the middle belt.
The Minister said the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama and Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is targeting a lasting solution to congestion at the facility.
As part of that effort, contractors working on the Sewua Regional Hospital, Trede Hospital, and Oforikrom Municipal Hospital have been engaged to accelerate ongoing construction works and equipment installation.
The aim is to urgently commission and open those facilities for public use to decongest KATH.
Dr Amoakohene added that works are also ongoing on the KNUST Medical Centre and the CATHLAB at KATH, projects expected to expand specialist care capacity in the region. He indicated that updates on other healthcare installations in the Ashanti Region will be provided in due course.
He thanked the public for their concern and patience over the bed-space situation and commended the dedicated staff of KATH, the Regional Health Directorate, and other health facilities for their professionalism and commitment to quality healthcare delivery.
KATH recently suspended the admission of new patients at its Accident and Emergency Centre, prompting calls for urgent expansion of secondary and district hospitals in Kumasi and its environs to take pressure off the tertiary facility.
