AI Reshaping Cyber Threats in Ghana- CID Boss Warns

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, says the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally reshaping cybersecurity, creating both stronger defenses and more dangerous attacks.
In a Facebook post after gracing the 4th ECOWAS Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon 2026, COP Donkor said AI is now a double-edged sword in the fight against cybercrime.
“AI is helping defenders detect threats faster, automate investigations, and strengthen security,” she stated. “But it is also being exploited by criminals to launch more sophisticated scams, malware, disinformation campaigns, and cyberattacks.”
According to her, this new reality makes continuous investment in skills, innovation, and talent development more urgent than ever.
The hackathon itself showcased young cybersecurity professionals across West Africa confronting complex cyber challenges, a sign, she said, that the region is building the talent needed for the AI era.
COP Donkor reaffirmed the Criminal Investigations Department’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats.
She said CID is strengthening Ghana’s response through four key pillars: advanced digital forensics, intelligence-led investigations, international partnerships, and technology-driven solutions.
“Protecting citizens and making Ghana’s digital space safer remains a national priority,” she added.
