Mampontenghene Fined Four Rams

Barima Saasi Ayeboafo II, Mampontenghene, has been fined four rams after multiple cases involving the Great Oath were brought against him before the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday.
The fine followed his decision to defy an injunction accompanying the invocation of the Great Oath to halt the processes for the enstoolment of an Oyoko Dikro.
At the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on August 17, 2026, an Assemblies of God pastor, Rev. Osei Kofi, who also identified himself as a member of the royal family, raised a case of Great Oath defiance against the chief.
According to him, following the demise of Nana Kusi Appiah, the Dikro, the Mampontenghene directed the family together with the Obaapanin of Oyoko to find a successor.
He said he immediately objected to the directive, drawing the chief’s attention to the fact that Obaapanin Boahemaa was not of royal lineage — an objection that was outrightly rejected.
He said during the appointment process, the Obaapanin sought to enstool her brother, which necessitated the invocation of the Great Oath against the Mampontenghene and led to his being summoned before the Kumasi Traditional Council.
According to him, in an attempt by the chief to dismiss his case, he invoked the Great Oath on November 11, 2025, to stall the process.
This, however, did not stop the chief from going ahead with his plans to continue with the enstoolment.
The case was subsequently reported to the Oyoko Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council, which invited the Mampontenghene for a hearing.
According to the head of the Oyoko Division, Nana Agyekum Kusi Ababio II, the Mampontenghene initially denied knowledge of any invocation of the Great Oath.
However, when he was pressed to annul the enstoolment, he refused, challenging the authority of the Otumfuo Oyokohene to give such an order.
The Council was further told how the Mampontenghene went ahead to introduce the Dikro to the security council within the area.
Responding to the allegations, Barima Saasi initially denied them but later admitted his fault.
Oyoko Dikro Stool Dispute
With regard to the dispute surrounding the Oyoko Dikro stool, Osei Kofi insisted that Obaapanin Boahemaa was not a royal.
According to him, she ascended the stool after the late chief offered it to her as a result of their friendship.
This was fiercely contested by the Obaapanin, who maintained that she is of royal lineage.
“I am a royal. Osei Kofi and his family are the non-royals,” she emphasised while challenging the Great Oath invoked by Osei.
Stepping forward before the Council was one Bobie Ansah, who also challenged both Osei Kofi and Obaapanin Boahemaa’s claims to the stool.
“None of them are royals. The stool belongs to my family,” he stated, while also invoking the Great Oath.
Other Matters Involving Mampontenghene
Another case brought before the Council involved the invocation of the Great Oath by one Kwadwo Appiah, who claims the female stool belongs to his family.
He invoked the oath against the chief after his attempt to have a member of his family enstooled as queen was rejected by Barima Saasi.
Otumfuo Oyokohene Nana Agyekum Kusi Ababio, who presented a report to the Council, said Kwadwo insisted that the Mampontenghene is not a royal, while the Mampontenghene refused to challenge the claims, saying the matter concerning his royalty had already received the attention of the Asantehene and had been settled.
“The stool has been missing for a long time. When the queen died, we went to get it back, but the Mampontenghene refused,” Kwadwo told the Council when given the opportunity.
Another individual, Owusu Ansah, is also challenging the royalty of the Mampontenghene, alleging that he sold property belonging to the Mamponteng stool.
“Owusu Ansah asserted that the fact that he sold stool property exposes the fact that he is not a royal and that he is seeking to squander the properties of the stool,” the Otumfuo Oyokohene reported, adding that the Mampontenghene clarified that the property had only been leased for some years and would revert to the stool.
Another major case involved claims by one Maame Sarah, who said she was contracted by the Mampontenghene to kill the Mampontenghemaa but that he had failed to honour his commitment.
She therefore invoked the Great Oath against the Mampontenghene, the Otumfuo Oyokohene said.
“When we inquired from the Mampontenghene, he denied and explained that the woman had offered to take him to a place to find a solution to his constant loss of consciousness whenever he went to his palace. He said he refused to go but gave her money to do whatever she had to do, and he is not sure if that was what led to the queen’s death.”
Fine
Otumfuo condemned the actions of the Mampontenghene, noting that he indeed contracted the services of the woman in connection with the death of the Mampontenghemaa.
“You are bringing trouble to yourself. Do you know what you are doing? Be careful. You indeed connived with the woman.”
In relation to the Oyoko Dikro Stool, he was fined four rams.
As a result of the fine, the cases were adjourned, as Otumfuo assured the complainants of the needed attention and resolution upon his return from an upcoming trip.
