C/R: 5-Year-Old Girl Drowns In Uncovered Manhole
The Winneba Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has recovered the body of a 5-year-old girl from a water-filled manhole at Ansaful, near the Christ Apostolic Church in Winneba.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
According to a report filed by the Public Relations Officer of the Central Region on Sunday, the victim’s father, Mr Francis Zewu, reported the incident at the Fire Station at about 7:57 p.m.
A team of four firefighters led by STNO I Anthony McCarthy was dispatched at 8:16 p.m. and arrived at the scene at 8:32 p.m.
Upon arrival, the team found family and church members gathered around the 12-foot-deep uncovered manhole filled with water. Firefighters commenced recovery operations using a water pump.
After about 34 minutes of operation, the lifeless body of the girl was recovered and handed over to the Police at the scene.
The Ghana National Fire Service did not provide further details on the circumstances leading to the child falling into the manhole.
