Xenophobic Attacks: Final Batch Of 41 Ghanaians Evacuated From South Africa Arrives In Accra

The final batch of 41 Ghanaians evacuated by the Government of Ghana from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks in that country arrived on Friday, September 4, 2026.

This brings to a conclusion the government’s evacuation exercise, which started in May 2026.

This was disclosed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, when he met the evacuees on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Through the exercise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated nearly 1,900 Ghanaian citizens who voluntarily registered to be brought home.

The remains of two Ghanaians who were attacked and killed during the xenophobic attacks were also repatriated, while one returnee died upon arrival in Accra, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in connection with the evacuation exercise to three.

Addressing the final batch of returnees, the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaians anywhere in the world.

He urged the returnees not to lose hope but to remain resilient and channel their time, skills and energy towards building a better Ghana.

Mr Ablakwa further emphasised that beyond the reintegration allowance provided by the government, every returnee must prioritise their health and seek medical attention whenever necessary as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives back home.

He assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide a full account of all funds expended throughout the evacuation process.

He expressed gratitude to allied agencies and private-sector partners whose support contributed to the successful evacuation exercise.
