2026 WASSCE: English Records Progressive Decline- WAEC

English Language has recorded a four-year progressive decline in the WASSCE for School Candidates, dropping from 73.11% in 2023 to 62.40% in 2026, according to provisional results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

WAEC, in a press release, said that while Mathematics (Core), Integrated Science and Social Studies all improved over the 2025 performance, English was the only core subject that declined, from 69.00% in 2025 to 62.40% in 2026.

In the 2026 examination, 315,094 candidates (62.40%) obtained A1-C6 in English Language, 49,771 (9.86%) obtained D7, 37,080 (7.34%) obtained E8 and 55,940 (11.08%) obtained F9.

Overall, 512,862 candidates comprising 225,270 males and 287,592 females from 1,022 schools entered for the exam, an 11.07% increase over the 2025 figure of 461,736. A total of 5,049 were absent.

For the other core subjects, Social Studies performed best with 393,918 passes (78.04%), followed by Integrated Science with 309,605 (62.08%) and Mathematics (Core) with 306,234 (60.75%).

On examination malpractice, WAEC said the Ghana Examinations Committee, at its 42nd Meeting on August 7, 2026, approved the cancellation of subject results of 7,434 candidates for bringing foreign materials into the halls and the entire results of 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones.

A further 957 subject results and 270 entire results have been withheld for various suspected offences, while results of candidates from 169 schools have been withheld for alleged collusion and are under investigation till October 30, 2026.
