Belgium and Egypt played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage clash at Lumen Field on Monday.
The Pharaohs got off to a flying start when Emam Ashour broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. The midfielder produced a clinical finish, hitting with precision from the edge of the box to send his side into a deserved lead.
For much of the first half, Egypt looked solid and dangerous on the break. Belgium struggled to find their usual rhythm, as the African giants organisation frustrated the European juggernauts and limited clear scoring chances.
The game changed dramatically in the 66th minute. Under heavy pressure from Romelu Lukaku, Egypt defender Mohammed Hany unfortunately turned the ball into his own net to draw the Red Devils back on level terms.
Despite the setback, Egypt refused to crumble. They reorganised quickly and managed to hold firm against Belgium’s late push for a winner. Both teams created chances but ultimately had to settle for a point each in what proved to be a competitive and open contest.
The result leaves both nations with important work ahead in the group. Belgium will next take on Iran on June 21, while Egypt face New Zealand on June 22.
