Police Seek Public Assistance to Arrest Man Who Gave Cigarette to Child In Viral Video
The police have initiated investigations following a viral video in which a man appears to be giving a child a cigarette.
They are seeking public assistance to identify and immediately effect his arrest.
In a statement on November 21, the police said every effort was being made to get to the suspect and ensure the safety of the child.
“We urge members of the public who have any information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the man or the child to report to the nearest Police Station.”
It comes after the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection forwarded the video to the CID for immediate action.
In a statement, it described the video as “disturbing”, adding that exposing children to harmful substances constitutes child endangerment.
“This conduct is abusive and a clear violation of the child’s rights and dignity, and it is punishable by law.”
“It contravenes the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which mandates that every child should be protected from exposure to physical, psychological, and moral harm. It also undermines key objectives in the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy, which promotes holistic child development and protection in safe and nurturing environments.”
