Xenophobic Attack: Ghanaians Urged to Exercise Caution in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal

The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has issued a public advisory to Ghanaian nationals following ongoing anti-immigration demonstrations in parts of the country, particularly in sections of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

In the notice released on May 7, 2026, the Mission warned that protest activity, crowd gatherings, and intermittent disruptions are likely to persist in key urban centres, including the Johannesburg Central Business District and its surroundings, the Durban CBD and surrounding areas, as well as other major transport corridors.

The High Commission strongly urged all Ghanaians in South Africa to remain alert and exercise continuous vigilance as the situation develops.

It advised community members to avoid protest sites, public demonstrations, and large gatherings, and to limit non-essential travel to identified hotspot areas.

Nationals were also reminded to keep valid identification and immigration documents readily available at all times, and to refrain from confrontations, inflammatory discussions, or sharing unverified information on social media, which could escalate tensions.

Ghanaian business owners have been advised to remain alert, regularly review local security conditions, and take reasonable precautions to protect staff and property.

The Mission emphasized the importance of staying informed through credible local sources and maintaining communication with authorities.

The High Commission further called on all members of the Ghanaian community to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with South African law enforcement agencies.

The advisory comes amid a surge in anti-immigration marches in several South African cities, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.

The Ghanaian mission said it continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as needed.

Ghanaians requiring urgent assistance have been encouraged to contact the High Commission through its official channels.
