We Cannot Undermine the Prisons System – Fomena MP

The Member of Parliament for Fomena Constituency, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has urged everyone to contribute to the safeguarding of the country’s prison system.
He believes that compromising or undermining the system will be quite costly for the nation.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Opemsuo Radio’s Kwame Adu Gyamfi Kumanin at the Prempeh Assembly Hall after the launch of the Ashanti Regional Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank on Thursday, June 25, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament stressed that prison welfare must be a top priority regardless of status.
“We cannot undermine the Prisons Service system,” he said. “Inmates’ well-being should be a topmost priority for all Ghanaians.”
Hon. Asiamah commended the leadership of the Ghana Prisons Service under Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie for introducing the Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank to improve healthcare for inmates.
He described the initiative as “laudable” and called for sustained public support from citizens, pharmaceutical companies and philanthropists.
On decongestion, the MP revealed that a Community Service Bill is currently before Parliament.
The Bill seeks to provide non-custodial sentences for offenders with misdemeanour cases once it is passed and assented to by the President.
“We are looking forward to passing the Community Service Bill to decongest prisons,” Hon. Asiamah added.
