Veep Champions Herbal Medicine Research

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has championed herbal research and development of Ghana’s traditional and herbal medicines, calling for increased investment.
According to her, scientific validation of local resources can reduce import dependence and create jobs in the pharmaceutical sector.
She stressed the need to explore new approaches by advancing Ghana’s traditional and herbal medicines through research.
“By harnessing the resources available within our own communities and advancing them through scientific validation, we have an opportunity to reduce our dependence on imported products, expand the local pharmaceutical market, and create new avenues for employment and professional placement,” she said.
She added that such an approach can unlock value from resources already around us while strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting greater self-reliance in the sector.
The Vice President made the call when she received a delegation from the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana at her office, where PSGH highlighted its contributions to healthcare delivery, including support for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and MahamaCares, and outlined plans for its 90th anniversary celebrations in September.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang congratulated the Society on 90 years of service, describing it as “a testament to the important role pharmacists play in Ghana.”
Workforce and System Reforms
The discussions also touched on concerns about young pharmacists, which Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said reflect a broader need to continually review and strengthen the healthcare system.
She urged stakeholders to interrogate existing structures, rethink how professionals are trained and integrated into the workforce, and identify innovative ways to create opportunities for the next generation.
She reaffirmed the government’s willingness to support proposals and partnerships that ultimately strengthen service delivery for Ghanaians.
