GJA to Honour Press Freedom Champions at World Press Freedom Day Gala on June 6

The Ghana Journalists Association will host an evening of recognition and celebration on Saturday, June 6, 2026, to honour individuals and institutions that have advanced press freedom, media development and democratic governance in Ghana.

The GJA will recognise H.E. Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Haruna Atta, diplomat and media advocate; Samson Lardy Anyenini, lawyer, journalist and Newsfile host; and the late Justice Kwame Afreh, former Court of Appeal Justice, who will be honoured posthumously for his contributions to press freedom.

Dedication and Valour Awards
Veteran journalists and media contributors to be honoured include Sir Benedict Batabe Assorow, former Editor of The Catholic Standard; Ambassador Gina Blay, former Ambassador to Germany and journalist; Kwabena Yeboah, renowned sports broadcaster; Kofi Badu, former MD of Graphic Communications Group Limited; Dr Gamel Nasser Adam, media practitioner and academic; and Prof. Kofi Agyekum, linguist and media scholar.

Posthumous awards will go to the late Abubakari Sidick Ahmed of Radio Universe and the late Nana Kwame Korang, Chief of Awua Doumasie, for dedication and valour in journalism.

Media Development and Leadership
Prof. Amin Alhassan, Director-General of GBC; Prof. Omane Antwi, former Board Chairman of Graphic Communications Group; and former Information Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi will be honoured for contributions to media education, governance and capacity building.

 

Media executives Beatrice Agyeman, Group CEO of Media General; Ken Ansah, COO of Multimedia Group; and Fada Dickson Narh, MD of Despite Media Group, will also be recognised for exemplary leadership in growing Ghana’s media industry.

Institutional Awards
Graphic Communications Group Limited, The Catholic Standard, Bank of Ghana, Ghana News Agency, and Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra will receive awards for unwavering support to journalism and national development.

Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör, will receive a Special Recognition Award for strengthening ties with the media fraternity.

Beyond the honours, guests will enjoy cultural performances, reflections on journalism’s future and its role in peacebuilding, plus cuisine and fine wine in an atmosphere of camaraderie.

The GJA has called on media practitioners, partners, stakeholders and the public to join in celebrating personalities and institutions whose contributions continue to advance press freedom and democratic development in Ghana.

Event
The event forms part of activities marking this year’s World Press Freedom Day and will take place at Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra, at 6:00 p.m.

It will be held under the global theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”

President John Dramani Mahama will be represented by Hon. Sam Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, as Special Guest of Honour.

Also expected are Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, and Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Dr Charity Binka, President of the African Women Leaders Network – Ghana Chapter, will chair the ceremony.

 

About 300 distinguished guests are expected, including Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors, UN agency representatives, media heads, corporate and development partners, veteran journalists, and captains of industry.
