V/R: 34 Rescued Alive, 6 Dead After Multiple Crashes
Firefighters in the Volta Region have pulled 34 people from mangled vehicles after multiple road crashes that claimed six lives.
The first two accidents occurred minutes apart along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road and at the Ho Civic Centre.
In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the rescue crews from the Peki Fire Station, led by STNO II Richard Amenyogbeli, responded to the two simultaneous crashes after receiving a distress call at 12:53 p.m.
The first crash involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck, GT 9993-18, travelling from Tema to Tamale, and a Toyota Camry, GE 735-14, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra.
All five occupants – four males and one female – had been rescued by bystanders before the fire crew arrived. Both vehicles sustained partial damage.
The second crash involved a Metro Mass Transit bus, AS 4984-09, travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board.
The rescue crew extricated and rescued 24 victims – seven males and 17 females – who were conveyed to Peki Government Hospital for medical attention.
Four people, including one male and three females, died at the scene.
Their bodies were handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation.
In a separate incident, rescuers from the Ho Regional Headquarters, under the command of ADO II Seth Sarfo, responded to another crash at the Ho Civic Centre after a distress call at 1:04 p.m. The crew arrived within two minutes and commenced rescue operations.
The accident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck, GE 342-11, a Pragya tricycle, No. 26-VR 455, and an unregistered motorbike. Ten victims were rescued and transported to Ho Municipal Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Follow-up at the hospitals later confirmed two male fatalities among the injured.
All vehicles involved sustained varying degrees of damage.
Investigations are underway to determine the causes of the crashes.
