TVC Condemns Attack on Forestry Staff, Destruction of Babatokuma Checkpoint Facility

The Timber Validation Committee has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Forestry Commission staff and the vandalism and burning of a newly constructed accommodation facility for timber checkpoint personnel at Babatokuma, near Kintampo in the Bono East Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 9th June 2026. The TVC expressed its condemnation during its Second Quarter Meeting held on Friday, 12th June 2026, at the Corporate Headquarters of the Forestry Commission.

In a statement, the Committee said it is deeply concerned over the violence, noting that such attacks undermine government and stakeholder efforts to ensure sustainable management of Ghana’s forest resources.

To address the situation, the TVC has urged all stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service, local authorities and community leaders, to take immediate and effective measures to investigate the incident and guarantee the safety of Forestry Commission personnel.

The Committee also called for a swift and transparent response to restore public confidence in the security and integrity of the working environment for officials.

The TVC further requested that all relevant statutory and enforcement agencies remain steadfast in upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of forest communities, and ensuring the sustainable use of the nation’s natural resources.

It urged law enforcement agencies to take decisive action to bring those involved in what it described as a “heinous activity” to book and prevent a recurrence.

According to the Committee, the attack represents more than damage to personnel and property.

It said the incident is a direct challenge to state authority and to ongoing efforts to protect Ghana’s forest resources.

The TVC warned that such acts could undermine investor confidence, particularly as Ghana has distinguished itself as the first country in Africa and the second globally to export Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade licensed timber.
