‘The Real Championship Starts Now’ – Queiroz Warns Black Stars Ahead of Colombia Clash

Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has warned his players that the real test of the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins in the knockout stage as Ghana prepare to face Colombia in the Round of 32.

Ghana booked their place in the knockout stage after finishing third in Group L. The Black Stars opened their campaign with a narrow win over Panama, shared the spoils with England, and later suffered a 2-1 defeat against Croatia in their final group match, finishing with four points.

It marks their first World Cup knockout stage appearance in 16 years, a significant achievement for the team and the entire nation.

Speaking ahead of the highly-anticipates encounter against Colombia on Saturday, July 4, the Portuguese gaffer emphasised the increased intensity and pressure that comes with the knockout phase.

“I have just told my players that the real world championship starts in the next round. The group stage is the warming-up, and qualification for the next round is like a credit card, but now you have to start paying.

“Everything goes to the winner, every game is drama, nobody can hide. That starts next game,” the former Iran and Egypt head coach added.

Queiroz’s comments reflect his vast experience at major tournaments and his desire to see the Black Stars rise to the occasion.

The Black Stars will be hoping to make history by reaching the Round of 16 for the third time in their World Cup journey.
