The Family Roots of Asantehemaa Nana Yaa Akyaa II

The Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Yaa Akyaa II, was born into the Oyoko Abohyen royal family.

Her Majesty was born Odehyie Ama Bonsu and christened Margaret Siribour on June 3, 1946, to Daniel Kwame Bonah Siribour and Odehyie Adwoa Akyaa.

Daniel Kwame Bonah Siribour, known as Konongo Siribour, was the son of Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siribour I, who reigned from 1906 to 1933.

Meanwhile, Odehyie Adwoa Akyaa, the daughter of Nana Akosua Barnie, was the daughter of Nana Akua Bakoma, mother of the fourteenth Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, who reigned from 1931 to 1970.

The Queen is the second of two children born to the couple.

Her formative years were spent at Ahenboboano, Ashanti New Town, Kumasi, where she lived with her mother while frequently visiting her father, D.K. Siribour, in Konongo during her school vacations.

Her Majesty got married to the late Kwame Afriyie, a civil engineer with roots from Ejisu Kwaso and Kumasi Apagyafiem.

Together, they were blessed with three children, namely the late Barima Osei Afriyie, Barima Kwaku Karikari, and Odehyie Akua Gyamfua.

Her Majesty ascended the stool on July 6, 2026, in succession to Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the fourteenth Queen of the Asante Kingdom.
