Mining In Motion: How Come Africa Wallows in Poverty Despite Abundant Resources?

In the next three days, two critical questions pertaining to the mining sector of Ghana and Africa will be reviewed and answered at the Mining in Motion Summit.
These questions include “How is it that in the age of science and technology, our generation should be saddled with all the carnage of illicit mining and the nation appears helpless to beat it? and;
“With all the resources with which the continent is endowed, how is it that Africa continues to wallow in poverty and want, our people constantly at the Mercy of Foreign philanthropy?”
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, in his speech at the opening of the summit on June 2, 2025, was certain that the answers to these would be found.
However, His Majesty’s concern was around the aftermath action by governments and industry players.
“In the answers to these questions, I hope this assembly will open a new page in the African narrative.”
The summit organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is under the theme, “Sustainable Mining & Local Growth – Leveraging Resources for Global Impact.”
It opened on June 2, 2025, drawing together miners, refiners, traders, regulators, NGOs, financial institutions, academia, policymakers and traditional leaders to forge a real practical solution for the future of Africa’s mining sector.
Present at the event were President John Dramani Mahama, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, mining mogul Sir Sam Jonah, Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Secretary General of AfCFTA, Wamkele Keabetswe Mene, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim.
