School Feeding Programme has Implementation Challenge – Hon. Kyeremeh

The Former Deputy Minister for Education, Honourable Alex Kyeremeh has said that, the problem with the School Feeding Programme is its implementation. He however acknowledged that it was a good initiative by former President John Agyekum Kuffour.

Speaking on Nkwantannanso on Opemsuo Radio, he explained that even before he was made a minister of state, the programme had its challenges.

He said the programme had foreign funding but funds ceased because upon investigation, donors found out that the funds were not being used for their intended purpose.

“The focus of the School Feeding Programme is school children in deprived communities and not cities. We added the cities and these children in the cities did not appreciate the food. They wasted it. I have videos to prove this. The donors stopped giving because of that,” he emphasised.

He added that since it involved a large number of school children, its implementation was affected as the government could not pay cooks.

“When I became the Deputy Minister of Education, the focus was on the deprived communities and we moved the programme from the cities to the smaller towns but the problem still remained. Government had no funds,” he said.

He urged the government to find a reliable source of funds if it intends to keep running the programme.
