Asafohene Appointed Chairman of Reconstituted KNUST Governing Council

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the chief of Asafo, Akyamfoɔ Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu as the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
With a résumé that spans international climate negotiations, national environmental policy-making, and grassroots leadership, the head of the Akwamu Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council brings a rare depth of experience to the council.
His presence is expected to enrich the institution’s strategic direction, anchoring it in values of accountability, innovation, and community-focused growth.
Known for his consensus-building approach and his insistence on evidence-based decision-making, his leadership is expected to foster innovation while remaining grounded in social responsibility.
The Council is tasked with providing strategic oversight, ensuring adherence to the University’s mission, and guiding KNUST in its pursuit of excellence in science, technology, and innovation.
The reconstituted Council was inaugurated by Minister for Education, Hon Haruna Iddrisu on April 28, 2025.
The new Council comprises a diverse group of individuals drawn from academia, government, industry, and civil society.
In line with the University’s statutes and national educational regulations, the composition reflects broad stakeholder representation, including faculty, non-teaching staff, students, alumni, and affiliated organizations.

Prof. Dr. Eric Kwabena Kyei Abavare, representing the University Teachers Association.
Mr Kane Nana Francis and Mr Gabriel Alexander Kpevu, represent undergraduate and postgraduate students respectively.
