Ghana Inaugurates BBNJ Steering Committee to Strengthen Ocean Governance Beyond National Waters

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has inaugurated Ghana’s National Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Steering Committee as part of efforts to protect marine life in areas beyond the country’s territorial waters.

The Committee was launched on Wednesday in Accra under the Global Environment Facility-funded project, “Enabling Activities to Support the Ratification of the BBNJ Agreement.”

The project is being implemented with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana.

The BBNJ Agreement, also known as the “High Seas Treaty,” focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The newly inaugurated Steering Committee will provide strategic guidance, coordination and oversight to ensure the effective implementation of the project.

It will also support Ghana’s preparedness to ratify and implement the BBNJ Agreement and advance national efforts to protect and sustainably manage marine biodiversity.

The inauguration, according to MESTI, underscores Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and promoting sustainable approaches to ocean governance, marine conservation, and the development of the country’s blue economy.
