Public Service Workers Paid COLA

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has announced the payment of a two-month Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to public service workers.

The payment reflects the month of July and August 2022.

It is 15% of the 2022 Basic salaries as agreed.

The Department noted that the payment for the two months amounted to GHC485,000,000.

The conversation around COLA was sparked on May 1, 2022, when the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah pleaded with the President and stakeholders to institute at least a 20% allowance for all Public service workers and some private-sector workers to serve as a cushion amid the rising cost of living.

On July 4, four teacher Unions declared an industrial action over their demand for the COLA.

A similar action was taken and threatened by other public service workers’ unions.

The government finally came to a consensus on a 15% rate on July 14, 2022.
