EOCO Reportedly Arrests Kofi Akpaloo

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has reportedly arrested the founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo.

Multiple reports say he was picked up from his residence in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region by the Office’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) at September 3 dawn.

The arrest is yet to be confirmed by EOCO, as well as the motive behind it.

The politician founded the Independent People’s Party (IPP) in 2011 and went ahead to contest in the 2012 Ghanaian general elections.

He was disqualified from contesting the 2016 Ghanaian general election as the presidential candidate of the party by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, a decision he unsuccessfully contested in court.

In 2017, he dissolved the IPP and formed the Liberal Party of Ghana. He was selected by the party to stand as its presidential candidate in the 2020 Ghanaian general election on 7 December 2020.
