MoH Leads National Health Compact Initiative

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has outlined key reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system through the development of a National Health Compact focused on improving coordination, financing and accountability in the sector.

Speaking at a consultative roundtable, the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said the initiative supports efforts to advance Universal Health Coverage and improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

He highlighted progress made by the Ministry, including the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, improved maternal and child health services, expanded immunization coverage, stronger disease surveillance systems and digital health innovations.

The Minister noted that government is prioritizing primary healthcare, sustainable health financing, local pharmaceutical and vaccine production, and improved emergency preparedness to address challenges such as rising non-communicable diseases and inequities in healthcare access.

Vice President of the World Bank Group, Dr Mamta Murthi, commended Ghana’s efforts, stressing the importance of strong primary healthcare systems, early disease detection and sustainable health financing.

She emphasized the importance of primary healthcare, early disease detection and integrated healthcare delivery, particularly at a time when many countries are facing financial pressures and rising cases of non-communicable diseases.

Dr Murthi also highlighted the growing role of technology and local manufacturing in improving healthcare delivery and strengthening health systems.

The roundtable brought together officials from the World Bank, Heads of Agencies, Development partners, Civil Society Organizations and Health Professionals to discuss the implementation of the National Health Compact.
