KMA Shuts Down Illegal Hotel at Asafo Terminal Over Sewage Breach, Arrests 22 Suspected Sex Workers

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has shut down an unregistered hotel at the Asafo Bus Terminal after uncovering an illegal sewage connection that discharged waste directly into a public drain.

The breach was discovered during a desilting exercise led by Metropolitan Chief Executive Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi as part of activities marking the National Sanitation Day (KMA Edition).

Investigations traced the source to a hotel facility operating without permits or licenses from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), and the KMA, the Assembly said in a statement.

Twenty-two women, most of whom are Nigerian nationals suspected of being engaged in prostitution, were apprehended at the premises.

Preliminary checks indicated that the individuals did not possess valid travel documents and may have exceeded the 90-day stay permitted under ECOWAS protocols.

The facility has been shut down.

The women have been handed over to the Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for further investigation and appropriate action.

The Assembly also demolished an unauthorised urinal and toilet facility at the Asafo Bus Terminal that was illegally connected to the same public drain.

KMA said it remains committed to sanitation, public health, and regulatory compliance, and cautioned individuals and businesses to “adhere strictly to all environmental and operational regulations.”

“The Assembly will not hesitate to apply the full rigours of the law to any persons found culpable,” the statement said.

The public was further encouraged to report illegal activities and desist from practices that undermine sanitation and public safety.
