KMA, Railway Authority Move to Protect Rail Corridors and Integrate Trains into Kumasi’s Transport Plan

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) have agreed to work more closely to protect railway lands and integrate rail infrastructure into the future growth of Kumasi, as the city seeks alternatives to ease pressure on road transport.

Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang led a KMA delegation to meet GRDA Chief Executive Dr Frederick Appoh in Accra on Monday for strategic talks focused on modernising railway infrastructure in the metropolis and aligning it with the city’s spatial development plans.

At the centre of the discussions were challenges of encroachment on railway reserves, improving urban mobility, and unlocking railway lands for sustainable commercial and mixed-use development.

Hon. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi stressed that stronger collaboration between KMA and GRDA is needed to ensure that ongoing and planned railway projects directly support improved transportation, economic growth and urban transformation in Kumasi.

Dr Appoh said preserving railway corridors, sharing technical data and promoting integrated transport planning will be critical to the successful delivery of government’s railway modernisation agenda.

He noted that rail offers a viable option to reduce congestion and connect Kumasi more efficiently to the rest of the country.

Both institutions have agreed to establish a Joint Technical Working Group, undertake joint inspections of railway lands, exchange technical information, and develop a roadmap for railway-oriented development within the metropolis.
