Verify WhatsApp Money Requests Before Sending- Cyber Security Authority

The Cyber Security Authority is warning the public to call and speak directly with contacts who suddenly request financial help on WhatsApp, as fraudsters increasingly use hacked accounts to solicit money.
In its “Cyber Habit of the Day” advisory issued on Wednesday, the Authority said scammers often take over WhatsApp accounts and then message friends, family and colleagues with urgent requests for financial assistance.
“If a contact suddenly asks for financial help on WhatsApp, call and speak with them directly before sending any money,” the Authority advised.
It explained that the habit matters because compromised WhatsApp accounts are a common tool used by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting victims.
Many people, it noted, send money without verifying because the message appears to come from someone they know.
The Authority has challenged Ghanaians to “always verify urgent money requests on WhatsApp before sending the money.”
The advisory forms part of the CSA’s ongoing public education campaign to promote safe online practices and reduce the incidence of cyber fraud in Ghana.
