Jinapor Charges GRIDCo to Probe July 29 Power Outage

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has directed the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to submit a comprehensive report on the nationwide power system disturbance that occurred on July 29, 2026.

The directive was given during a meeting with key stakeholders in the power sector convened by the Minister to undertake a comprehensive review of the current state of the sector and to address recent developments.

According to Mr Jinapor, a key focus of the discussions was the widespread outage that resulted from the system disturbance.

He said GRIDCo has been tasked to detail in its report the circumstances that led to the incident, the response measures undertaken, and the corrective actions required to strengthen the resilience and reliability of the country’s power system.

The Minister assured that the government is committed to building a power sector that can adequately support economic growth.

“Together, we will build a stronger and more resilient power sector that powers economic growth, supports businesses, and improves the lives of our people,” he stated in a Facebook post following the meeting.

The National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a power system disturbance in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, resulting in an interruption of electricity supply in parts of the country.

In a press statement, GRIDCo said the disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. and led to the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system.
