Inmates’ Well-Being Rests on Us- Prison Service Boss

The Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), says the well-being of inmates rests on the shoulders of the Prisons administration and the state.

She made the remarks on Thursday, June 25, during the launch of the Ashanti Regional Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.

The initiative, she explained, creates a sustainable platform for mobilising and storing healthcare equipment and drugs to improve wellness for inmates across prisons in Ghana.

“Inmates’ well-being lies on us,” Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie stressed in an interview with Opemsuo Radio after the launch. “The Prison Medicine and Equipment Bank is a well-structured system for mobilising and storing medical equipment and drugs for inmates.”

According to the Prisons boss, officers and the state at large must take responsibility for inmate health.

She called for continued support from the public, pharmaceutical companies and philanthropists to sustain the initiative.

Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie also highlighted the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees” initiative, which she described as a comprehensive programme designed to rehabilitate inmates and prepare them for life after release.

“It is a complete compact for prison cycles to effectively rehabilitate inmates into society,” she said.

She added that the Service is rolling out numerous programmes to give inmates holistic preparation in all aspects of life so they can re-enter society meaningfully.
