IGP Interdicts Officer For Manhandling Suspect

The Ghana Police Service has announced the interdiction of a police officer for his arrest of a suspect at Dadease near Kumawu in the Ashanti Region which has since raised eyebrows.

The officer was captured in a viral video reining the suspect by his neck with a belt and dragging him on the ground.

It is unknown what crime the suspect was accused of and what necessitated the use of such force to effect his arrest.

In a brief statement on their official Facebook page, the Police Service said the officer has been detained and interdicted as investigations carry on.

“The said Police officer was detained and has been interdicted and will be taken through the due process of the law.”

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare has since contacted the victim and his family on the phone.

“As the investigation continues, the Inspector-General of Police yesterday sent a team from the Ashanti North Regional Police Command to engage the victim’s family. He has also spoken to the victim’s mother via the telephone and assured her of a thorough investigation into the matter.”

Netizens have taken to social media to commend the IGP and condemn the “inhumane” action of the officer.

“Best appointment so far from Nana Addo………The police are there to serve and educate the people not to brutalise the citizen…..Good job IGP, Ghanaians appreciate ur hardwork and ur dedication”

“I think plenty police personnel don’t understand their work cos this is so inhumane.”

“Politics have eaten into this service which supposed to be an independent body. Police service is just like teaching field it’s a calling. This should not be issues that a well informed police officer well trained should be locked. It’s an insult to the service.”
